Nose plastic surgery

Nose plastic surgery (rhinoplasty) is one of the most creative and intelligent plastic-aesthetic surgeries.

Nose is a central figure of the face, so it is particularly important for facial harmony. During high-quality nose plastic surgery, the nose shape is adjusted the way that the whole face looks harmoniously. It is possible to remove hump on the dorsum, correct dorsum’s and nostrils shape, change the form of the tip of the nose (make it thinner, reduced, lifted, etc.), reduce the entire nose, change the angle between the nose and upper lip.

About the procedure

Nose surgery means reshaping a large nasal structure by removing part of the cartilage or bone (depending on the area of the nose). Sometimes additional materials like cartilage graft are needed. Sometimes there is a need for additional materials like cartilage graft. Cartilage taken from the nasal septum of the middle part of the nose is most commonly used for this purpose. In rare cases, the cartilage can be taken from ears and ribs. Skin, soft tissue, tissue fillers and grafts (fatty substances) can also be used when reshaping the nose. The goal is to increase the volume of damaged areas while shaping elegant and proportionate nose.

Am I a suitable candidate?

Future patients should consider the possibility of rhinoplasty if:

  • They are feeling dissatisfaction with the shape, size, angles of their nose;
  • The nose is too big/too small or disproportionate comparing to other parts of the face;
  • They have breathing problems due to significantly twisted nasal septum;
  • The tip of the nose is too high/low/wide, also if there is hump on the dorsum.

A good candidate for rhinoplasty is a patient with a good health condition (is not suffering from serious underlying diseases, infectious diseases, fevers, etc.), with a positive mood and realistic expectations.

When you are preparing for rhinoplasty, the first step is primary consultation with a plastic surgeon. Plastic surgeon Jelena Romanova-Paškevič will be happy to consult you. You will learn about the main steps of preparation process, you will discuss your health condition and expectations. The surgeon will answer all of your questions in regards to the prodecure. If you are unable to attend the initial consultation, we can always consult you remotely by e-mail: info@sapiegosklinika.lt

The surgeon marks the areas where he/she will make cuts in order to reach nasal cartilage and the bony part (nasal base). Open operating technique when cuts are made on the outside of the nose with a slight cut under the nose between the nostrils, which contacts with other cuts made inside the nose. Skin is gently lifted, so structures become clearly visible. This open rhinoplasty technique allows to perfectly visualize the entire nasal structure, and therefore helps to foresee specific and precise surgery solutions. The aim is to lessen trauma and correct the problem accurately.

The nose is reduced/ increased  by adding or removing specific cartilage or bony part, and by shaping structures that hold the nose from the inside.

The end of the surgery: when the nose is shaped, the previously lifted tissue and skin are placed back and cuts are sewn up with small stiches.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia.

Immediately after the surgery you will have to wear the nose splint – it will protect your nose when you sleep or from accidental hits. The wearing period of it should be from a few days to a week or more. Do not be surprised – the nose and the area around it can be really swollen, sensitive, with bruises and it can hurt. On the first day after surgery patient is in the ward, observed by a team of nurses to make sure that the postoperative process is smooth.

Limitation of the physical activity: physical activity should be limited for some time. Clear time is very individual and you will discuss it with a surgeon. It can take from a few days to several weeks or month.

All general complications related to surgical interventions are:

  • Complications related with anesthesia;
  • Seroma or hematoma (blood or fluid accumulation under the skin, which requires removal);
  • Infection;
  • Bleeding;
  • Paresthesia;
  • Allergic reactions;
  • Scars;
  • High blood pressure;
  • Damage of adjacent structures;
  • Desired result is not achieved and there is a need for additional surgery.

Complications associated with rhinoplasty are not common, but it is necessary to know and consider them:

Skin problems or skin injuries because of the bandage or grafts that have been used and inserted under the thin skin;

Nose “block” because of large swelling inside of the nose;

Nasal septum damage.

Potential risks will be thoroughly discussed before signing the consent to the operation. Your surgeon will provide all the necessary information and advice on how to protect yourself from postoperative factors and risks associated with them. Your surgeon will also advise on what to do to return to your daily life and enjoy the harmony as quickly as possible.
