Laser treatment of acne

Acne – simple pimples (acne vulgaris) – is one of the most common skin diseases, during which pimples occur on face, chest and back areas. Up to 70-90% of teenagers have this disease, but acne becomes more and more common among adults, especially women. Acne can not only leave scars, but also can socially isolate and psychologically affect a person. However, acne treatment (removing the spots with a laser) will help you get back healthy, bright facial skin.

About the procedure

Acne is a disease of the hair follicles and sebaceous gland. Its occurrence is determined by many factors. In adolescence, the secretion of sex hormones intensifies, stimulates the the sebaceous glands. Skin cells clogging the hair follicles duct, blackheads forms, it creates perfect conditions for the bacterium reproduction and the development of inflammation (red acne, abscesses).

Acne rash types ranges from blackheads, whiteheads, red pimples, abscesses to deep painful nodes, cysts. Red spots and scars may remain after the rashes have healed.

Hormonal imbalance, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, improper skin care (lack of hygiene, use of improper cosmetics), stress (stress at work and home influences the of inflammatory rashes), diet (sweets, dairy products, fast food) can also provoke rashes. Acne is usually treated with topical and/or oral medications, but medications can make the skin dry, irritated, and resistant to bacteria.

“Sapiegos Clinic” has an excellent alternative to medication for acne treatment – the German diode laser Asclepion MeDioStar NeXT. It effectively treats acne (based on clinical trial evidence), which manifests itself as inflammation – red, pustular acne. The infrared rays emitted by the laser penetrate deep into the skin to reach the hair follicles and sebaceous glands – the heat emitted by the laser destroys the colonies of the acne bacteria (antibacterial) and inhibits the activity of the sebaceous glands. In the case of inflammatory rashes and abscesses, the heat from the laser disrupts the microcirculation in the inflamed area, reducing redness. In this way, the laser accelerates the healing of existing acne and reduces the formation of new inflammatory rashes.

To achieve a therapeutic effect, the number of treatments should be selected individually. For mild to moderate acne 2-3 treatments are enough. For active phase of inflammatory acne 4-6 or more treatments are needed.

It is recommended to avoid UV rays for at least 4 weeks on the areas that will be treated (no sun exposure / solarium).

Inform your doctor if you are taking photosensitizing drugs: retinoids, doxycycline, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, estrogens and progestins (oral contraceptives), chloroquine (anti-malarial drugs), etc.

During the consultation, specialist at Sapiega clinic will evaluate the clinical image of your rash and then he will select the most suitable treatment method. The amount of treatments depend on the severity of the disease.

After special gel is applied, laser handle is attached to the skin. During treatment, the patient experiences a slight tingling or mild pricking sensation. Cooling system is built into the laser, so it gives a gentle anesthetic effect, so you should not worry about the pain during the treatment.

The infrared rays emitted by the laser penetrate the skin up to the hair follicles and sebaceous glands – the heat emitted by the laser destroys the colonies of acne bacteria, inhibits the sebaceous glands and disrupts the microcirculation in the inflamed area, thus reducing redness.

Skin redness, swelling and/or sensible heat feeling can appear after the treatment, which disappears within 1 or 2 days. Crusts or vesicles can appear, which can not be manipulated.

It is recomended to avoid sun exposure and intensive sun (solarium) without sunscreen on treated areas for at least 6 weeks. Use sunscreen (not less than SPF 50) if you have to be outdoors.

Avoid using cosmetics on treated area for 24 hours after the treatment.

Cosmetics for washing and cleansing should be gentle and without alcohol. You should also avoid using agents that drie the skin. Extra hydration is necessary for both dry and oily skin types.

Skin care should be performed using special cosmetics, designed to address the skin problem and the mechanisms of acne development.

Acne treatment procedures are never without a risk, usually, this treatment has only few reported complications:

Sometimes lesions in pigmentation can appear (damaged skin brightens or darkens in the treated areas), but it usually takes a few weeks to several months. In rare cases, scarring may occur.

    F.A.Q
Does the laser remove the scars left over from acne?
The laser beam has a complex effect on the skin, so the treatment not only kills the bacteria that cause acne, but also stimulates both collagen production and skin cell renewal. It improves the scars: they become less visible or invisible.
What areas of a body are suitable for the treatment?
Laser acne treatment can be used to treat acne on the face, back and chest areas.  If the area affected by acne isn’t large, treatment can be carried separately in each zones: cheeks, chin, forehead, armpits or décolleté.
How many courses are needed to achieve maximum results?
Each case is individual. Normally, if the acne is not severe and the affected area is small, 2-3 treatments are sufficient. However, in order to enjoy completely healed skin for as long as possible, it is necessary not only to follow the recommendations of the doctors, but also to be determined to change your daily habits.
    Is the procedure painful?
During the procedure, you may feel tingling, heat.  However, the procedure is perfectly tolerated, since the laser is equipped with a cooling system, providing a gentle analgesic effect.
Is it possible to combine laser treatment with other methods of treatment?
Your doctor may offer you a complex treatment: from cosmetological procedures, drug treatment to laser treatment.
